Tech session topic:  ASHRAE’s Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDG) – Going Beyond Minimum Standards

Tech Session Speaker: ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Ron Jarnagain

PDH: 3 (for the technical session)

Topic Abstract:

The Advanced Energy Design Guide (AEDG) series of documents is one of the most popular in ASHRAE’s history with well over a 500,000 copies in circulation. Focused on providing clear guidance for achieving 30% and 50% energy savings in smaller commercial buildings, the AEDGs meet the need for a large number of projects where project budgets and design professionals might be in short supply. The presenter chaired the initial AEDG for Small Offices as well as 3 additional guides and will offer perspectives on the partnership that contributed to the guides, the intent of the guides and how practitioners can apply the guides.

Mr. Jarnagin has been involved in energy-related research and development activities for over 35 years. His background is diverse, including work in the areas of fluid flow, power plants, automotive and transportation systems, HVAC systems, energy use in buildings, smart grid activities and energy standards development. Mr. Jarnagin has served on numerous utility, government and business advisory boards, lending his expertise to solving their respective energy problems. He served on the faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Florida for 10 years, and has been with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the past 20 years.
