PROGRAM:  Julia Keen Presenting  “Managing for Diversity and Inclusion”

PRESENTER: Julia Keen, Professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University will be presenting “Managing for Diversity and Inclusion”. Diversity and Inclusion are important focuses of employers today. The advantages commonly attributed to a diverse workforce cannot be attained by simply making a few strategic hires and implementing policies. There is a need for cultural change that not only benefits the traditionally underrepresented populations but also provides a better work environment for all employees. This presentation will explain and define diversity and inclusion and provide specific management strategies that can be employed to promote positive cultural change and attract/retain a diverse workforce.

PROGRAM:

Please join us for the ASHRAE Iowa Chapter Student Night on Wednesday, November 30th at the Iowa State University Student Innovation Center. Site address is 606 Bissell Rd, Ames, IA, 50011. Visitor parking is available near the Iowa State Armory in Lot 21 (900 Bissell Rd) and at the East Parking Deck (500 Wallace Rd). Limited street parking may also be available.

SIC tour to begin shortly after 4:30pm and will be led by Lincoln Pearce with IMEG. The tour will close with a Measurement & Verification presentation provided by the USGBC.

Dinner and drinks to follow at Sweet Caroline’s (316 Main St). Student Chapter scholarships will be presented and there will be updates from the Membership Promotion and Research Promotion Chairs.

Professor Tom Lawrence – “The ‘Green Awakening’”

This session provides an overview of the rapidly evolving regulatory and economic market changes, and discusses methods and procedures for completing a building CO2 footprint. New regulations are in the works that will require compilation of greenhouse gas emissions, and programs will likely come about that involve carbon emissions trading or perhaps a ‘carbon tax’.

Professional Ethics Workshop

This workshop offers a detailed discussion of the general obligations and the rules of conduct that apply to design professionals as prescribed by their code of ethics. The discussion then explores the most common type of complaints, along with select individual complaints and the decisions rendered by the National Ethics Council.  Participants will review the professional code of ethics with attention to the recent changes to the code. Helps A/Es understand the topic of ethics as it relates to the design professions. This webinar presentation will satisfy half (1 PDH) of the State of Iowa’s PDH Professional Ethics requirement.

This presentation will discuss the purpose and advantages of building labeling and its effect on building performance. An in depth explanation of the ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient Program will also be provided. The presentation will cover what distinguishes bEQ from other labeling programs as well as the process used to meet the requirements to qualify a building for labeling.

1:30 – 2:30 ASHRAE Guideline 36 (Virtual Presentation)

ASHRAE Guideline 36, High-Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems, was created to develop and maintain best-in-class standardized HVAC control sequences. This guideline is all about the concept of “less is more.” It allows engineers to reduce engineering time by adapting standard sequences already proven to perform. It minimizes programming and commissioning time for contractors. ASHRAE Guideline 36 reduces energy consumption, cost, and system downtime with more resilient systems, control sequence compliance, and diagnostic software. The guideline also promotes communication between specifiers, contractors, and operators by creating a language of common terms.
